Men's Soccer Place 3 on All-Conference List

The Heart of America Athletic Conference released their Men’s Soccer All-Conference teams this week and the Pioneers placed 3 players on the teams. In a vote done by the conference coaches at their annual end-of-the-season meeting, Trent Remmich, Michael Shadfar, and Luis Padilla were honored with the selections.

Trent Remmich, a sophomore from Wichita, Kansas, was voted as a forward to the HAAC 1st Team. He finished 3rd in the conference in scoring with 13 goals and 6 assists on the season. He led MNU in goals scored and assists for the season and was a big reason why the Pioneers were so dangerous offensively. “Trent had a breakout year for us,” stated Coach Wardlaw. “I am happy that he has been recognized in this manner and I know he has a big future ahead of him.”

Michael Shadfar joins Trent on the HAAC 1st Team as a Midfielder. The junior from Overland Park, KS came to MNU from Johnson County Community College where he played for 2 years before transferring to MNU. He earned a starting role midway through the season and ended the year with 4 goals and 5 assists from his defensive midfield position. “Michael ended up being a huge part of our success,” stated Coach Wardlaw. “Once he learned our system and his position he was a big part of our midfield.”

Luis Padilla, a senior from Tepatitlan de Morelos, Mexico was selected to the HAAC 3rd Team as a forward. Luis had a breakout year after struggling his junior year to really make an impact on the team. He finished the year with 4 goals and 4 assists. Coach Wardlaw stated, “I am extremely happy that Luis was honored with this selection. He has grown a ton as a player and a person in the last year and it is gratifying to see his hard work pay off in this manner.”

The Pioneers finished the year with a 9-7-1 overall record and a 4-4-1 conference record

The Kansas City Wizards have had surprising changes lately. They want to make a total renovation on the team: half of the players are transferable for the next draft, Omar Bravo comes from the club Chivas de Guadalajara, Mexico,as the new franchise player, and last but not least the new name of the team is "Sporting Kansas City". Also, they will open their new stadium on June 2011. What's next??

U.S. 2022 World Cup bid falls short

U.S. lost the battle to host the soccer World Cup for 2022. Surprisingly Qatar won. The tiny desert nation of Qatar beat out the United States as the 2022 World Cup host, with FIFA brushing aside doubts about blistering heat to bring soccer's showcase event for the first time to the Middle East. The 22 voters on FIFA's executive committee, some accused of corruption in the weeks leading up to their meeting, picked Russia to stage the 2018 tournament, another first-time host. Qatar, which has promised to overcome heat of up to 130 degrees with air conditioned outdoor stadiums, won out over the U.S., Australia, Japan and South Korea in a secret vote Thursday. Qatar won the final vote 14-8. The president of FIFA Sepp Blatter closed the ceremony with these words "We go to new lands". It is practically the reason of why Qatar won over the U.S.

Tough Loss, Strong Finish

Men's soccer suffered a frustrating loss on on Saturday, playing at no. 7 William Jewell. The Pioneers came in needing a win in order to pursue post season play, but were unable to come up with the victory. Jewell scored in the eighth minute off of a set piece to make it 1-0, and things started to go downhill for the Pioneers after that. Senior Felipe Guimaraes was shown a very questionable red card by the referee, forcing MNU to make a comeback playing a man down the rest of the game. In the end, the task proved too hard for the Pioneers, as they fell 5-0.
On Tuesday, MNU hosted Benedictine College for the last conference match. Although the game meant vitually nothing for both teams (MNU was already eliminated from the playoffs and Benedictine was already in) MNU came out to prove what a great team they were. They dominated the game from start to finish, ending with a solid 1-0 victory. Trench Remmich scored the goal, assisted my Michael Shadfar. Although it's not the type of end of season the Pioneers had hoped for, they look forward to next year, returning a team that is capable of anything.

Men's Soccer: MNU vs. Avila

Solid Win for Pioneers

The week started off well for the Pioneers this week against Avila University. With 3 games left to play, the Pioneers had to win the last 3 games of the season to ensure themselves a postseason. Playing at Avila (Swope Park) on Wednesday, the Pioneers were facing a must win situation. They broke out to an early lead with a goal from Sophmore Trent Remmich, but struggled to keep control of the game for the remainder of the first half. MNU came out strong the second half with an unassisted goal from Luis Padilla. MNU made it 3-0 just a few minutes later by scoring on an incredible individual effort from Freshman Belrum Vartanian. The Pioneers would finish the game 3-1 after giving up a weak goal to Avila. Nevertheless, they came in needing to leave with a win and that's exactly what they did. The Pioneers now face a tough road game at #9 William Jewell Saturday and a home game against Benedictine. Come support the Pioneers at their last home game!

Tough Loss!!

On Saturday, the 23 of October the Pioneers Soccer team lost in a tough game to Gracelands Yellowjackets.
Due to a communication mistake on the side of the MNU defense, GU scored a quick goal in the 7th minute already. Graceland could manage to carry that 1-0 lead through the poorly played first half. The second half went a bit better for the 'Neers. MNU was dominating Graceland in ball possession and they kept them in their half of the field. Nevertheless Graceland managed to score another goal in the 78th minute which put them ahead by 2. The Pioneers kept fighting and scored possibly the Goal of the year with an overhead volley into the upper 90 by Michael Shadfar. In the end the time ran out and MNU had to take that tough loss.
MNU’s next match will be at 8pm on Wednesday night against Avila University. It will be played in the KC Wizard training facility "Swope Park".
Come and support your Pioneers!!!
